Lending a helping coin

THE northern NSW city of Lismore has been devastated by floods, but a fitting fundraiser for it will be held in Portland.

Portland Lions Club will put a new face on an old fundraiser developed by member and past district governor Max Oberlander, turning what was ‘Coins for Kids for cancer research’ into ‘Coins for Floods’.

To that end the public are invited to donate a coin on a trail between Woolworths and the Royal Hotel between 9am and 3pm on Saturday.

Mr Oberlander said he hoped to raise $1000. It was a fitting fundraiser because Lismore is the home of the first Lions Club in Australia, formed in 1947.

“I saw them up there and thought they are going to need some money to get themselves back on track,” Mr Oberlander said.

“I tracked down the secretary and she said ‘we’re going to need all the money we can get’, I explained to her what I was planning on doing and she was happy as.”

Lions members would also doorknock shops, while the Royal Hotel would hold a coin toss event and the Portland Golf Club was also holding an event, Mr Oberlander said.

Portland Lions Club would also add more money to that raised by the public, Mr Oberlander said.
