Contaminated recyclables end up in landfill

AROUND 20 per cent of recycling waste collected from Port Fairy, Mortlake, Caramut and Koroit’s yellow recycling bins last week was contaminated. 

From February-August, around 500-tonne of recyclable materials was sent to landfill due to incorrect items being put in yellow bins across the shire.

Moyne Shire chief executive, Bill Millard said the cost of diverting recyclables to landfill was similar to the cost of having it recycled.

“The issue isn’t just about cost, it’s more about doing the right thing and making better use of recyclable materials instead of sending them to landfill,” he said.
