WorkSafe charges racing club and trainer

WORKSAFE has laid eight charges against a turf club and horse trainer over the death of a former local apprentice jockey.

WorkSafe charged the Cranbourne Turf Club with six breaches of the Occupational Health and Safety Act after the 22-year-old woman died when she was thrown from a horse at the Cranbourne Racecourse about 4.45am on August 30, 2019.

The apprentice jockey was riding a section of the track known as the sand trails at the time of the incident.

WorkSafe alleged the club had failed to maintain the sand trails and ensure it was safe for use.

The horse trainer, Saloon Park Pty Ltd, was also charged with two breaches of the act.
