A HAMILTON man who threatened to kill his wife and children so police would shoot him has been jailed for two weeks.
The 48-year-old man, who can’t be named without identifying the victims, faced the Hamilton Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to a range of family violence-related offences, including assault, making threats to kill and breaching a family violence intervention order.
The court heard the man and his partner had been together for almost 30 years when he discovered she was involved in an online relationship with another man last year.
The man’s lawyer, Kerry Schroeder said the affair had left him “struggling to cope” and led to a breakdown of their relationship.
The court heard an argument on September 27 last year about walking their dog led to police being called after the man threatened to kill his family.
Police prosecutor leading senior constable, Gary Steel said the man had spent the afternoon drinking alone and began arguing with the victim when she returned home.
During the argument he told the victim he would “cut her head off”, kill their children and burn their house down, Ldg Sen Const Steel said.
