Kelpie Festival called off two weeks out

CASTERTON’S iconic Kelpie Festival is the latest victim of Victoria’s COVID-19 outbreak, cancelled as the town prepares to celebrate the event’s 25th anniversary – but all is not lost.

Casterton Kelpie Association president, Karen Stephens said online committee meetings over the weekend determined the best course of action was to cancel the festival, however the Australian Premier Working Dog Auction will go ahead, thanks to modern technology and online auction platform, AuctionsPlus.

“Given the developments with COVID-19 across Melbourne and spreading across the state, we just couldn’t, in all good conscience, continue with the event, even if restrictions were lifted,” Ms Stephens said.

“The health and safety of our community and our volunteers was paramount in making this decision and it was just too close to continue the event.

“If this was in six weeks’ time, we might have been able to sit for a couple of weeks and see where the situation was at, whether it was going to turn around or escalate, but it was just too close to be safe.
