Plaque unveiled

ON Sunday, November 7, a plaque commemorating the World War II service of men and women of Dunkeld and district was unveiled at the Dunkeld Cemetery.

The project was an initiative by the Dunkeld Museum and has been over three years in the making.

The plaque recognises the service of 105 Dunkeld and district residents who served in the Australian Navy, Army, Air Force, Volunteer Defence Corps and the women’s services, who are buried or have memorials in the Dunkeld Cemetery.

People in attendance at the function were welcomed by Museum president, Simon Armytage, who introduced Museum committeeman, Peter Nelson who gave an overview of the project that lists 105 men and women’s names that are cast in bronze on this plaque.

Speakers at the unveiling included Derek Morse who spoke about his father, Major Sidney “Bill” Morse MC, MID and Peter Cameron who spoke of his father, Captain Lindon “Lin” Cameron MC and Bar.

The plaque was unveiled by Phyllis Leech and Coral Templeton, the wives of servicemen, Private Henry Leech OAM and driver, Malcolm Templeton.

In closing, Peter Nelson thanked the Southern Grampians Shire Council, Dunkeld Cemetery Trust and Dunkeld Museum members Heather Funk, David Gordon, Joyce Gordon and members of the Museum Committee, past and current who had given so freely of their time and funding to bring the project to completion.

The museum will be publishing a book telling the stories of Dunkeld & District service personnel, with the release expected in 2022.
