Books among the beets

PORTLAND residents looking for a good book deal need look no further than the Community Garden this weekend as the organisation hosts a book sale at the site.

The second-hand books, which are on sale for a maximum of $2, have been donated by the community over more than year.

“We originally put the call out for books for the sale over a year ago, but with restrictions we hadn’t been able to host it,” president Wayne Barrett said.

“The books have just kept on coming and now we’re finally able to hold the sale so we’ve got at least 1000 here ready to go.”

Funds from the sale are earmarked for the garden’s new building extension to further diversify the space.

The space will see a “community hub” built, with the current workshop expanded to allow for more equipment and more space for groups to use.

With at least 1000 books on deck, Mr Barrett hoped he could raise a significant amount of funds this weekend.

“$1000 would be great,” he said.

“But we’re happy with whatever we get.

“The money is fantastic but the sale also means we could get people to the garden who might not have been here before.

“They’ll come along and see its much more than just a cabbage or two – there’s more than just gardening and maybe that will encourage them to visit more often.”

The sale will be held between 10am and 1pm this Saturday, November 13 at 81 Henty Street.
