When Acca Dacca meets painting

IF there’s one thing David Goebel likes as much as art, it’s music – and now the Portlander is bringing his two passions together in the most creative way possible.

David, a resident at Blair House, is looking for donations of old guitars, which he intends to decorate and eventually display in an interactive exhibit.

The project, Guitar Graffiti, is in its early stages and is being done in conjunction with local sculptor Phil Cousins, who works with David on various art projects.

Mr Cousins said the reasoning behind the guitar project was simple.

“David loves his music as much as he loves his art,” he said.

“We were looking to explore the idea of art and guitars all together.

“Rory Carter had been working with David, he’s a painter and I come from a sculpture background, and we’re just trying to facilitate new projects and ideas for David to work on.

“David does the painting and I’m going to help him gather some stories about the peoples’ guitars, or a song.

“We haven’t decided on a venue yet where people can see the guitars and potentially listen to the story or a tune, but we’d like to make it interactive.”

Guitars were also ideally suited for another reason.

“There’s a culture of the presentation of a guitar or a musical instrument,” Mr Cousins said.

“That includes us experimenting with some spray painting and there’ll be a variety of different techniques we can use.”

David is looking forward to the exhibition and has a varied musical taste to boot – from film scores to heavy metal.

“I like the idea of it,” he said.

“Every Tuesday I have music classes (at Kyeema) and I play the song from The Lion King.

“I like Acca Dacca (AC/DC) and Def Leppard.”

Such is David’s love for AC/DC he drew and painted the picture in the photo on this page while being interviewed – it’s him and three friends in a tribute.

He has also been busy artistically – at the back of the photo you can see his contribution to the Exhale art installation on the Bentinck St fence, while from November 25 his work will be among those at the Dreams and Aspirations exhibition at the Portland Arts Centre.

Anyone with guitars to donate can contact Mr Cousins on 0419 308 970 – leave a message if necessary.

“We’re happy to come and pick them up too and also happy to take bongos, recorders and any other instruments that are floating around,” Mr Cousins said.
