THE 28th annual Heywood to Portland Toy Run has been hailed a success, with more riders than ever before turning out for the holiday event.
The run kicked off at 10.30am on Saturday in Heywood and saw at least 135 riders show up to support the cause which is run in conjunction with the Salvation Army.
The largest cohort previously seen was 127 riders and organiser David Upton said he was blown away with this year’s group.
“I think I counted around 137 bikes in total,” he said.
“After the past two years we’ve had, I was surprised so many people turned up and showed their support.
“We even had a few bikes stop in at Heywood and drop toys off before heading on a different bike ride.
“There were also plenty of community members who popped down to donate money or toys.
“It was really heart-warming to see everyone come together.”
Portland Salvation Army corps officer lieutenant Heather Stamp said the run was not only a record for bikes, but it was possibly a record for toys and money as well.
“We’re tallying up the toys and money today (Monday),” she said.
“But the bus was filled with toys and other gifts and we’re thinking it was a record for the run.
“We’re so grateful to the community for their support not just through the toy run but our other Christmas appeals as well.
“It’s been an incredible year despite the restrictions everyone has faced.
“We’re looking forward to delivering the presents and sharing some hope and kindness for those in need from the community.”
