Parklander candour

ON Thursday, waves of memories, gratitude, respect, and all imaginable levels of grief washed over the friends and families of Parklands Golf Club, as we gathered in large numbers to formally commemorate the recent passing of Chris Morey and Cocky Stewart.

For some, the waves will gradually subside to ripples, while others will continue to carry that raw and aching pain of loss for some time to come.

All of us will remember.

Annual presentations

A POST-MATCH barbecue was held on Saturday followed by the club’s annual presentations.

Despite a year seriously curtailed by COVID restrictions, several awards were presented including the men’s Championship to George Donaldson and runner -up to Mark Miller, the ladies scratch championship to Irene Box and the ladies’ handicap championship to Gaye Goggin.

The men’s eclectic scratch championship went to Dale Grambau and eclectic handicap honours went to Barry Oldaker.

Les Pye and Bruce Taylor won the 4BBB championship.

Monthly Medal

A GOOD number of contenders arrived to do battle in the Saturday stroke event, all fully aware that the best nett score would win the monthly medal.

Peter Irvin’s nett 66 was scored off the back of an exceptional putting round, and a determination to remain on the fairways.

Having secured the medal win, Irvin was ineligible for consideration in the Saturday stroke event.

It was eventually won by Taylor with a nett 67, two shots clear of Oldaker and Grambau, who both finished on 69; Oldaker relegated Grambau to third place on countback.

Nearest the pins went to Irene Box on the second and fifth, Oldaker on the third, Ron Oakley on the 11th, Sue Irvin on the 13th who came so, so close to a hole in one, and Graeme Torney on the 15th.

Longest putts went to Bernie Cook, Mitch Miller, Box and Steve Nattrass.

Oakley hit the longest straight drive on the ninth with Oldaker taking out the birdies and ferrets’ draw.

Unsurprisingly, Irvin’s measly 19 putts for the 18 holes took out the putting award.

Summertime Friday nine-hole stableford

ALEX Walter was the convincing winner of this event, scoring 22 stableford points over the nine holes.

Taylor’s 19 secured second place, while Irvin’s 18 was a nice warm-up for the next day’s event.

Nearest the pins were Taylor on the fifth and Miller on the eighth.

Irvin took out the birdies and ferrets’ draw with Walter holing the longest putt

Wednesday 12-hole stableford

IRVIN started the week as he finished it with a convincing round of golf.

His 27 stableford points over 13 holes held out Walter on 25 and Taylor on 24.

Irvin also took out nearest the pin awards on 13 and 15, while Phil Kosch sank the longest putt on the first.

Monday

PARKLANDS Golf Club ladies held their season wind-up and annual presentation today with nine holes of golf at Grampians Golf Course, followed by lunch at Sturgeon View in Dunkeld.

Irene Box was declared winner of the eclectic scratch award with Marg Donehue taking out the eclectic handicap award.

Heather Wilkinson won the birdies and ferrets aggregate, while Box won the award for the most threes.

This Saturday the club will host a 4BBB event.
