Bail breach charge for driver who ran off road

A GEELONG man who ran his car off the road on the Glenelg Highway on Wednesday morning was found to be in breach of his existing bail conditions.

The 32-year-old man was the driver in an accident that occurred at 7.38am on Wednesday, January 5, which saw a blue 1997 Ford Festiva hatch run off the road at a bend, east of the Hamilton Harness Racing Club on the Glenelg Highway, before travelling about 90 metres off the road and coming to rest in a thicket of blackberries.

The driver and his female passenger were able to exit the vehicle without assistance from emergency services and only sustained minor head injuries.

The man was later taken to the Hamilton Police Station where he was charged with disqualified driving and conduct endangering life.

Hamilton Police Sergeant, Rex Habel said the investigation into the accident revealed when the car drifted on the wrong side of the road it caused an oncoming motorist to take evasive action to prevent a serious head-on collision.

Sgt Habel said the driver was already on bail for other matters and had breached his bail conditions.

The Geelong man was remanded to appear at the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Friday, January 7, for a bail remand hearing.
