Celebrating a Century

AT 100-years-old, much-loved Hamilton resident, Lois Fisher has a cheeky sense of humour.

When admiring her well-earned centenarian letters from the Queen and Prime Minister on Thursday morning, Ms Fisher pointed at the notably youthful photo of the Queen and said “I don’t think that was taken now – if I was looking like that now at a 100 …”

Born in the front bedroom of her parents’ house on King Street, Hamilton on January 8, 1922, Ms Fisher has lived in Hamilton her whole life and worked at Macasker’s Newsagency on the corner of Thompson and Gray Streets for three decades.

“I’ve always been here – I worked at the newsagents down on the corner here and I worked there for 30 years, and I had a wonderful boss Mr McCasker,” she said.

When asked what the secret to living a long life was, Ms Fisher said it was just living life to the fullest, leading a good life and being kind.

She said it was her long, happy marriage to her husband Jack and close-knit family made life truly enjoyable.

“Just having fun, enjoying life, being kind to other people,” she said.

“We had 62 years; I was very happy with Jack.

“I have a very happy family and then all the years with Jack it made life that little bit better.”

The Grange’s customer service officer, Narelle Ness said there were a lot of celebrations planned for Ms Fisher’s milestone birthday.

“We’ve got a lot of celebrations planned for Saturday,” she said.

“Lois is very kind, I think that’s what she stands out for in the Grange, she’s very kind to everybody.

“She’s a very popular resident here with lots of friends and we just adore her here.”
