THE Hamilton History Centre was broken into again on Sunday night, with thieves smashing a section of the side door to gain access to the building.
Hamilton Police detective senior constable, Scott Lenehan said the burglary occurred at some point between Sunday night and 10am Monday morning.
“During this time someone forced open the door at the side of the Hamilton History Center,” he said.
“They’ve tried to force it open with a small crowbar or a jemmy bar on the side, and that didn’t work so they’ve smashed the top panel and unlocked the door.
“They’ve broken through the door, unlocked the door, and stolen all the money out of the donation box.”
Hamilton History Centre president, Ian Black said he was shocked to find the door damaged on Monday morning and contacted police who are currently investigating the incident.
“We had the police up and they’ve done finger printing and you name it,” he said.
“Nothing has been stolen but there was a donation’s box that was broken into, but I think it was empty.”
Mr Black said this is the second break in to occur at the History Centre in six months and said the thieves went straight towards the donation box, leaving the rest of the room untouched.
“They must’ve been looking for money,” he said.
“None of our files or things had been thrown around.
“They came in and found the donation box but if there was any money in it, it probably would have only been $2 or $3.
“(Last time) we lost a bit of money but we weren’t exactly sure how much it was, but we did lose money.
“But we lost no money this time, they went empty-handed I think.”
Mr Lenehan said no weapons were left at the scene and anyone with information on the robbery should contact police straight away.
“If anyone knows anything let us know either by contacting Crime Stoppers or the Hamilton Police Station,” he said.
“Stealing money that had been donated to a charity is a pretty low act, so we’re keen to find who did it.”
