Car smashes into roadhouse

MJ’S Roadhouse at Glenthompson was left seriously damaged after a car ploughed through the wall on Sunday morning.

Hamilton police constable, Anna Smart said that at 1am on Sunday, January 30 a vehicle containing two occupants was travelling on the Maroona-Glenthompson Highway, when the driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to become “lodged” inside the Glenthompson business.

The two occupants of the vehicle were both from Warrnambool and escaped the accident without sustaining serious injuries.

“The driver was treated by paramedics at the scene and was taken to Ballarat Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” Ms Smart said.

“The cause of the accident is still being investigated at this stage.

“If anyone did witness the collision they are more than welcome to come forward and contact Hamilton Police.”

MJ’s Roadhouse owner, Jo Jenkinson said the business would continue to operate despite the serious damage caused by the accident.

“We’re getting things operating as best we can,” she said.

“We’re getting through quietly, just pottering around.

“The kitchen is out of the question, it was wiped out.

“We have to get the structural engineer in before we can move the car, so the car is still in the building right now.

“The post office is still operational on a limited basis because we’ve got no power at the moment.

“(Business) has slowed down, but people can still access milk and stuff but we’re limited on food.”

The roadhouse is a popular spot for locals and operates as a post office, newsagency, service station, and grocery store, as well as sells dine in and take away food.

Ms Jenkinson said the community had been a great support since the accident and was overwhelmed with their generosity.

“If only you could see the local community behind us offering to help with the clean-up,” she said.

“The locals are very good, we had some lovely locals yesterday bringing us tea and coffee.

“The local community association is going to offer us a hall to operate in if we need it too.”

Unfortunately, this is the second time Ms Jenkinson will rebuild MJ’s Roadhouse, as the business burnt down in 2006.

Despite the serious setback, Ms Jenkinson remained optimistic.

“We got through it once before so we will again,” she said.
