Novavax vaccine available

AS of yesterday, all Victorians aged 18 and over can access the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine through selected state-run centres, GPs and pharmacies - providing another option for the small number of Victorians still waiting for their first or second dose.

The vaccine will be available through more than 400 general practices and community pharmacies across the state, with locals being able to access the vaccine from February 28.

Robsons Guardian Pharmacy manager, Robyn Ward said they would be offering the new vaccine to people aged 18 years or older.

“We will be taking walk ins Monday to Friday from February 28,” she said.

“The vaccine can be used as a primary or secondary dose for people over the age of 18.”

The Hamilton Medical Group will also be offering Novavax from February 28, with a spokesperson saying a waitlist is currently available to locals.

“Currently anyone wishing to have a Novavax vaccine can place their name on the waiting list, simply call the clinic ask to place your name of the list,” they said.

“When we begin running clinics these will be available to book online via HotDoc.”

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation recommends the Novavax vaccine be given in two doses at least three weeks apart.

Novavax is not currently approved for use as a third dose or for children, however, it can be used with another approved COVID-19 vaccine as either a first or second dose.

It is one of four vaccines approved for use in Australia, along with AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna.

Vaccination against COVID-19 is still recommended for those who have recently recovered from the illness, because any natural immunity gained from infection is short term.

Health minister, Martin Foley said this would provide another option to those still waiting to get their vaccination.

“For a small number of people, this will be the extra push they need to get vaccinated,” he said.

“With bookings now open, now is the time to go and get a jab.

“If you’ve been sitting on the fence, please get vaccinated – it’s important for all of us.”

Bookings for Novavax are now open Victorians can call the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398 or book online via portal.cvms.vic.gov.au.
