Feely gets a taste of AFL/VFL action

FORMER local, Tom Feely, got a taste of AFL action last weekend when he took part in the combined AFL/VFL practice match between Geelong and Richmond.

The 25-year-old has signed on with the Cats’ VFL team for 2022 was one of a few who got the chance to step up and help with numbers during the six-quarter hit-out between the two clubs.

“A few of us VFL listed boys got asked to have a run,” Feely said.

“We only played the last two quarters, but it was a great experience.”

Feely, who spent some time playing for Glenelg in the SANFL a few years back, got through the game unscathed, and took plenty from the game.

He said only playing half a game had its challenges but was grateful for the opportunity.

“We only got two quarters which was hard to get into,” he said.

“The first practice match of the year is always tough; everyone wants to prove a point.

“Personally, my game wasn’t great, but it was just good to be out there again.”

Feely played mostly on the wing and crossed paths with notable AFL players and matched up against a Richmond AFL premiership player for much of the two quarters he played.

“Marlion Pickett and Sydney Stack both played; I played on Pickett for a while, so it was good playing on some quality players like him,” Feely said.

As for the season ahead, the former local is just hoping to get through the year and play as many games as possible.

“I’m just wanting to get a full year of footy in,” Feely said.

“My body hasn’t been too kind to me, so I just want to play consistent footy.

“The plan is to play as much VFL as possible, but when I can I’m very keen to get back and play with Leopold, it’s such a great club.”
