Extensions a boost to fire fighting

A SIGNIFICANT upgrade to the Heywood’s CFA building is almost complete, making it an easier run for the local fire crew.

The large extension has included new changing rooms, a larger meeting room and space for the iconic red trucks.

“They put an extra bay onto the southern side of the shed, all new toilets, a meeting room and our old meeting room’s been converted into change rooms,” Heywood CFA captain Mark Saunders said.

Mr Saunders said the old meeting room used to be a quarter of the new one’s size.

“There is a smartboard so we can brief crews before they go out to a fire,” he said.

“We will do first aid training in there, so CPR and stuff like that on the floor.

“We do actually have other community groups use it as well.”

Before, there were no changing rooms, members had to put their gear over what they had on right beside the truck, while now there are two separate changing rooms for both female and male volunteers.

The changing rooms are easily accessible for those in a rush and have plenty of space.

Unfortunately, while expected to be finished December 2021, the finishing touches of the renovation is yet to be completed.

“It was meant to be done in December, but with COVID they had trouble getting materials,” Mr Saunders said.

“That was supposed to be partly signed over Friday, but we still got a few issues with it.

“So, they're ongoing at the moment until they have fixed it, but other than that, hopefully, it’ll be signed over in the near future.”

Mr Saunders said they had leased the land of the neighbouring house, allowing a bigger area for training.

The new renovations and training will be sure to come in handy while assisting a neighbouring brigade that may be short in numbers for certain jobs.

“One of the neighbouring brigades, we've been supporting them because they haven't had enough members to turnout, so we sort of respond to their turnout area,” Mr Saunders said.

“They've just signed a few new members so hopefully they'll get back on their feet and get going again.”

Mr Saunders said the Heywood CFA received a government grant of around $50,000, which paid for the back part of the station’s renovations, while the other parts of renovations were paid for by local funds.
