Mortlake paedophile identified

THE 87-year-old man who allegedly sexually assaulted two male victims in Mortlake 40 years ago has been identified as paedophile priest, Gerald Ridsdale.

Ridsdale has been in prison since 1994 for over 100 counts of sexual abuse against more than 70 victims.

He will be eligible for parole in 2025.

An additional 24 charges were made against Ridsdale on Tuesday, March 8, including a number of sexual offences such as sexual penetration of a person aged 10-16 years old, and indecent assault.

The most recent charges relate to the alleged historical sexual assault of two males in Mortlake in 1981 and 1982.

The Spectator previously reported on the news that a man had been charged over the Mortlake assaults.

Western Victoria MP, Stuart Grimley said in a statement the new charges were “bitter-sweet news”.

“I am glad to see two additional victim-survivors seeking their justice, but I am disappointed that there are more victim-survivors out there,” he said.

“As much as I know the world will be a better place with people like Ridsdale in the ground, I hope he remains breathing until the court hands down its judgement, so these survivors can get their justice.

“I commend the bravery of these two survivors who have been able to pursue these charges.

“My strength and support are with the two victim-survivors who are undoubtedly still affected heavily by these abhorrent crimes.”

Ridsdale is scheduled to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court later this month.
