Great day for a bike ride

This year’s edition of the Rotary Club of Portland Beats Cycle for Hope is done and dusted, with the charity ride to Cape Bridgewater going off without a hitch.

“It was a really terrific day, and it was nice to see so many family groups taking part this time,” said event convenor Frank Farnesworth.

“There were around 30 junior riders, with many of them around the primary school age, then at the other end of the age spectrum there was a good number who were over 70 taking part.”

In total around 130 people took on the 22km supported ride from Hanlon Park along the coastline, before boarding the bus back to Portland, a similar number to last year’s attendance.

The ride was led off from Portland by John Wolf, as recognition for his long standing support of the cause.

A colleague of event founder Paul Beattie, Mr Wolf has been involved from the early days of the event, and this year his family raised a significant donation for the program at his mothers funeral.

Around a third of the money the program distributes each year, the $3700 raised on Sunday will allow them to support around 20 families being affected by cancer, through the ‘random acts of kindness’ program.

Next up for the group who help run the charity is a well earned short break, before planning begins for the mid-year quiz night and charity auction, which is returning for the first time since 2019.

Mr Farnesworth says people or organisations who would like to hold a fundraiser or support the cause should get in touch via the Beats Cycle for Hope Facebook page, or contact the Rotary Club of Portland.
