Police operation targets heavy vehicles

A HEAVY vehicle operation was completed by local police units last Tuesday, March 29, in Hamilton, Glenthompson, Warrnambool and Portland, with trucks checked for fatigue management, impaired driving, and vehicle safety checks.

The operation was a collaborative effort from the Hamilton, Portland, and Warrnambool Highway Patrol units, with assistance from some Hamilton General Duties officers.

The single day operation saw 47 trucks checked, with 82 breath tests and drug tests completed, all returning a negative result.

Hamilton Highway Patrol sergeant, Darren Smart said the operation was a success with only 17 offences detected.

“I am very happy to say we did not detect any impaired drivers,” he said.

“There were a number of defect notices issued but all in all we are very happy with the results.

“We had a big roadblock at Glenthompson, and in the afternoon vehicles roamed around the Hamilton area and did random intercepts of vehicles.

“Warrnambool and Portland had one car each in their areas, but the main operation happened in Glenthompson.”

Sgt Smart said locals could expect to see more operations taking place on the roads as police continue to take measures to ensure the safety of all road users.

“We think it’s important to keep doing this sort of thing as vehicles are big heavy machinery that can be dangerous, and the bigger they are the more dangerous they can be.”
