THE Hamilton Kangaroos have started the Western Victoria Female Football League (WVFFL) in the perfect way, defeating Warrnambool by 48 points at Melville Oval on Friday night.
The Kangaroos’ early inaccuracy kept the Blues in the game early on, with the visitors kicking truly in their only shot on goal to take a one-point lead into the first break.
The home team kicked four second-quarter goals to grab the lead and moved clear on the scoreboard.
A half time margin of 11 points saw the Kangaroos get some breathing space, but the job was not complete.
Inaccuracy continued to haunt the home team in the second half, as the Kangaroos kicked 10 behinds, but a five-goal half saw the home team eventually claim a 9.16 (70) to 3.4 (22) victory.
Emily Pitts and Mimi Chun were standouts for the winners, while Eliza Jagger kicked three goals to be the main threat up forward, while Claire Logan was the other multiple goal kicker with two.
Kangaroos coach, Pat Sherlock said it was a great way to start the new season.
“It was good to get a run around under lights and get the win,” he said.
“Warrnambool was a bit short on numbers, they will be similar to last year and it was good to get the edge over them.
“Hopefully we are in the top two or three.”
The Kangaroos withdrew their Under-18 team and are focusing on the senior competition this season with increased numbers giving the club confidence.
The team had 14 new players who didn’t play last season along with some new faces to the senior side who had previously played in the youth girls competition.
“Some of them have played 30 or 40 games in the junior ranks and a couple of the younger girls addressed the group and shared some things and it was good they were happy to take on that leadership,” Sherlock said.
“Emily Pitts and Mimi Chun were our two best players and they are two girls who have come from the Under-18s.
“Hopefully we get a few more into the team this week.”
Molly Smith broke her collarbone early in the contest and is unlikely to play again this season, but that was the only dampener in what was a positive night for the team.
The Kangaroos will take on Stawell Warriors in round two.
