DARTMOOR Football Netball Club has been left devastated, after a car crash in the early hours of Monday morning claimed the life of much-loved senior player, Korrey Smith.
Emergency services were called to a location at Greenwald about 4.30am on Monday, after reports a car had crashed into a tree on the Princes Highway; Smith died at the scene.
Football netball club president, Ryan Childs said club members had gathered on Monday afternoon to support each other, but were struggling to come to terms with the loss.
“I just don’t know what to say, it just doesn’t seem real,” Childs said.
A former league and club medallist and recipient of the inaugural Bill Madex Memorial Cup in 2021, Smith was highly respected off the field and a valuable on-field contributor to the Giants’ senior side.
“Congrat’s Korrey (Smith) for winning player of the day; it couldn’t have gone to a more deserving person and I know dad would definitely agree with that - he loved you like you were one of his sons,” BJ Madex said when awarding the cup in her late father’s honour.
The club posted a brief, but heartfelt tribute to its fallen brother on social media:
“(This) will go down as one of the darkest and saddest days for the club.
“He will be so incredibly missed on and off the field.”
