Welcome to our monthly column keeping locals up to date with the activities of the Casterton Vice-Regal band …
The Casterton Vice Regal Band has farewelled Barry Davis and Jean Black who, between them, have logged almost a century’s service.
Barry and Jean, who are both retiring from band duties and were recognised for their contributions to the band and community at an in-house talent quest, last month.
During the event players showcased their skills through solo, duet and ensemble performances.
Barry has played with the band for 75 years while Jean has contributed more than 20 years’ service.
Both have performed many roles within the band over that time.
Being special guest adjudicator for the talent quest, Jean was also on hand to offer feedback and encouragement, particularly to the band’s learners.
A wide range of performances were on show from classical, swing, marches and vocal to comedic and pop classics.
The Talent Quest was part of the band’s ‘Keeping the Beat’ project designed to increase the band’s presence in the community and performance ability, through a series of events.
Supported by the Glenelg Shire Council, the ‘Keeping the Beat’ project will also feature a community talent quest in June and a concert in September, followed by community Christmas performances in December.
