Major road boost

A RE-ELECTED Coalition Government will deliver a boost to local roads in the Southern Grampians and Moyne Shires with a $15 million investment split between the two.

Incumbent Wannon MP, Dan Tehan welcomed Moyne Shire mayor, Ian Smith, who was on site in Woorndoo for the announcement on Monday morning, and thanked him for working collaboratively with the Federal Government to deliver road improvements for local roads in the Moyne Shire.

“It’s wonderful to be able join you today to be able to announce that we will provide $11.1 million to upgrade the Chatsworth-Woorndoo Road,” Mr Tehan said.

“This is committed funds – in the budget – so $11.1 million will go to improving this road we are standing on today.

“This road is used a lot by local traffic but also by other road users, such as trucks and tourists passing through and we need to make sure it can be properly widened and in a state where it is safe for our local community to travel on.”

Mr Tehan also thanked Cr Smith for working with him to put together a road package for Moyne that included a Coalition election commitment of $3.6 million – meaning there would be a total of $6 million combined for Moyne to improve other roads in the shire.

“This is a package which I’ve put together with shires right across the electorate, so what we are going to see is 20 roads that will be improved right across the electorate of Wannon, by the Coalition Government working with local government,” he said.

“So, a re-elected Coalition Government will deliver this roads package, which will total approximately $39 million with a contribution from the Commonwealth and a contribution with local government.”

Mr Tehan thanked all local shires across Wannon for working with him to put the package together.

“It means that we will have delivered $160 million worth of roads improvement for our local roads right across the electorate of Wannon,” he said.

The mayor thanked Mr Tehan and said it was fantastic news.

“This is a complete game changer for the roads in the northern section of the shire,” Cr Smith said.

Cr Smith was also thrilled with the election commitment regarding the $3.6 million announced for the southern part of the shire.

“Without federal funding, these roads wouldn’t get done,” he said.

“We are just so thrilled to have some of these back roads recognised in the program.

“Because of GPS technology, these roads are getting a lot more traffic on top of the usual heavy livestock traffic they usually carry.”

Mr Tehan also announced that Southern Grampians Shire Council (SGSC) will receive an election boost of $3.94 million along with a commitment from SGSC that totals $4.9 for local roads under a re-elected Coalition Government.

SGSC roads to be funded include Nareen Road at Nareen, Hamilton-Chatsworth Road, near Woodhouse, Caramut-Glenthompson Road, Glenthompson, and the Gallie and Dens Hill Roads at Coleraine.

Corangamite Shire will also receive $3.16 million of funding, and combined with Corangamite Shire, will take it to nearly $4 million.

Mr Tehan said the upgrades to both the Southern Grampians, Moyne, and Corangamite Shires and will make driving safer, more efficient, and reduce wear on vehicles.

“Delivering better roads with more federal funding for local roads and highways is part of my plan for Wannon,” he said.
