Tehan an unbackable favourite

WANNON MP and Liberal party candidate Dan Tehan is currently an unbackable favourite with bet waging company Sportsbet to retain his seat at the upcoming Federal Election on May 21, sitting at the remarkably short price of $1.01.

That would mean if Mr Tehan won and you had placed $100 on him you would make a $1 profit, or a $10 profit from a $1000 bet.

Sportsbet’s odds have Dan Tehan (Liberal) $1.01, Gilbert Wilson (Labor) $14, and Alex Dyson (Independent) $21, Hilary McAlister (Greens) $51, Graham Garner (Independent) $67, Ronnie Graham (One Nation) $91, Craige Kensen (United Australia Party) $101, and Amanda Mead (Liberal Democrats) $151.

The TAB’s offering is different, with the Coalition $1.05, Independent $8, Labor $15, The Greens at $67, and One Nation at $101, with no odds listed for the United Australia Party or the Liberal Democrats.

This has prompted independent candidate, Alex Dyson to claim he has overtaken Labor’s Gilbert Wilson as the second favourite, despite ambiguous TAB odds.

Although the odds for an independent winner have moved to $8 with the TAB, there are two independent candidates running for the Wannon seat, with Graham Garner from Colac also in the race.

Dyson, who is campaigning on fixing the current housing crisis, climate change, and a renewed focus on integrity in Federal Parliament, said he is feeling confident about his position which has been reflected in the TAB’s odds.

“The Wannon Independent Campaign is peaking at the right time,” he said.

“People have seen the chronic underfunding our region gets compared to our neighbours and are now rightfully asking, why don’t we deserve better?

“In fact, the five minutes it takes to vote differently this time around could equate to tens of millions of dollars more funding for the entire region, as politicians realise the people of Wannon are willing to change things up if their loyalty continues to be taken for granted.”

Mr Dyson said an indicator of the Liberal Party’s ballot nerves was the last-minute spending announcements in the last week, describing it as ‘sandbagging’ the seat to protect against the Independent’s high-profile campaign.

“I’m glad that, after 12 years, Dan Tehan is finally taking his role as Member for Wannon seriously,” he said.

“I do hope locals see through this transparent attempt to win back lagging support though, and on May 21 vote for someone who will fight for Wannon’s fair share for their entire term.”

With two days to go until the election, time will tell whether the odds makers have got it right, with Mr Tehan a more than firm favourite.

Meanwhile, at one of the 'Sack them all' freedom rallies that were held across Australia on Saturday, three Wannon candidates vying for the Federal seat on May 21 took a vow to reject a pay rise, should they be elected.

At the Warrnambool rally, Independent candidate from Colac, Graham Garner, said he would sign a statutory declaration to reject a pay rise, if elected.

He called on the other candidates at the rally to join him, with Liberal Democrats candidate Amanda Mead, and United Australia Party candidate Craige Kensen, both stating they would agree to the wage freeze.

The Australian Values Party's Senate candidate, Chris Burson, who was also in attendance at the rally, also stated he would not accept a pay rise.

A hot topic of discussion at the rally was mandated vaccines, with Ms Mead voicing her strong concerns about the issue.

Mr Garner followed suit and said mandates had devastated the small business community, particularly on a personal level, with people losing their jobs.

Likewise, Mr Kensen said people should not be forced to struggle financially simply because they chose not to get jabbed.

Mr Kensen said he was open to the idea of opening a third electorate office should he be elected, especially given the size of the electorate.

'Sack them all' freedom protestors held the pre-election rallies urging people to vote against the major parties.
