Reno’s looking promising for third-term start

CAPITAL works to renovate parts of the Casterton Primary School could start as early as term three this year, despite recent difficulties formalising plans.

Two buildings are set to be redeveloped after other parts of the school, including the former library and the canteen, were originally expected to be demolished completely.

However, school principal, Jill Robertson said the works had yet to be confirmed due to a “very tricky” process.

“Initially we had difficulty with the tender process because there was only one tenderer, which isn’t enough,” she said.

“They’ve had to resubmit and broaden their advertising range to get a tender in.”

The process was also delayed after it was determined sewerage works also needed to be completed in the school.

At this stage, the school’s northern building on Jackson Street is expected to become what will be known as the ‘hub’, with kitchen facilities, a staff conference room and a new library.

“We’ll also probably have music lessons (in the building),” Mrs Robertson said.

She said the south-east building would also be subject to works.

“Ultimately, the two classroom blocks down south will have three classrooms in each one,” she said.

She expected works could be completed as early as the end of 2023.

While the former library will not be subject to any works at this stage, after originally being earmarked for demolition, Mrs Robertson said she still had potential plans for the building.

“I am hoping that I can work towards perhaps offering before- and after-school care and vacation care out of that building,” she said.

“I think it’s a really lovely building and important asset for the town.”

Funding for the school’s works is being provided by the State Government, with the budget allocating more than $2 million in the next financial year alone and a further $2.5 million pre-allocated.
