Baimbridge College prepares for a night of music

PREPARATIONS are in full swing for the highly anticipated Baimbridge College Music Night with students and teachers excited to hold the annual event for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

The hour and a half long show will feature Baimbridge students performing a range of genres including soul and blues, with the audience able to sing along to renditions of well-known songs such ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ by Bill Withers, and ‘Fire’ by Bruce Springsteen.

Baimbridge College music coordinator, Glenn Hayes said the performance would offer something for everyone, with the students adding their own twist on classic songs.

“There will be songs people know but in an unusual format,” he said.

“It’s a fairly well paced performance … the students will be using some really unusual instrumentation.”

Mr Hayes said it was lovely to once again hold the school’s traditional music night to show the community what the students had been working on throughout the year.

“We are looking forward to it and are really keen,” he said.

“It will be good to have a big audience again after the last few years.

“The night will be a compilation of what we’ve done throughout the year in smaller concerts, and we are farewelling the year 12’s as it’s the last official performance we will have with them.”

To provide performance opportunities for students, Baimbridge College introduced Dungeon Concerts earlier this year which are monthly performances held in a small room in the music, art, and drama centre, located down several flights of stairs.

Mr Hayes said the Dungeon Concerts had become a popular place for students to try new pieces, with the performances open to the public.

“Generally speaking, it’s a very friendly place to try out things because we’ve never insisted the pieces be perfect,” he said.

“People really enjoyed doing it because there’s less pressure and a really friendly audience.

“They can then use it as a springboard for something else like performing at a general assembly or a concert.

“A lot of new rock bands and musicians take the opportunity to perform there, now we will feature them in this performance.”

Mr Hayes said the students had been rehearsing their pieces in preparation for the big show and the gym was being fitted out with lights and other equipment to ensure a high-quality production.

The event will be held in the school gym and will begin at 7pm.

There are no restrictions on who can attend the free event and tea, coffee, and nibbles will be provided afterwards.
