WELL-KNOWN Indigenous and Gunditjmara singer-songwriter, Archie Roach, died on Saturday aged 66 after a long illness, whilst surrounded by family and friends.
The acclaimed musician died in Warrnambool Hospital and his sons released a statement honouring his life.
“We are so proud of everything our dad achieved in his remarkable life,” the statement said.
“He was a healer and unifying force. His music brought people together.”
Inducted into the ARIA hall of fame in 2020, his death was confirmed by his record label on Saturday evening.
Uncle Archie suffered a stroke after the death of his wife Ruby in 2010, and was diagnosed with lung cancer the following year; the removal of a lung later still didn’t stop him performing, with the assistance of an oxygen tube.
Tributes have poured in from across the country for the Gunditjmara (Kirrae Whurrong/Djab Wurrung) and Bundjalung Senior Elder.
His sons gave permission for his name, image and music to be used, to continue his legacy and inspire people.
They also spoke of the medical staff who had looked after him for an extended period.
“We thank all the staff who have cared for Archie over the past month,” his sons said.
