THE first doses of monkeypox vaccine arrived in Victoria on Tuesday but are restricted to those who meet eligibility criteria or are considered most at risk, with access for those in regional Victoria to be via a regional local Public Health Unit.
The Western District Health Service (WDHS) is one of the health services under the auspices of the Barwon South West Public Health Unit (BSWPHU) - which was initially established in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The BSWPHU is getting a small batch of 20 vaccines this month, with more vaccines expected to follow in September.
WDHS advised that when more vaccines become available it will work with the BSWPHU to distribute and administer the program locally.
Monkeypox can spread from person-to-person through skin-to-skin contact, contact with infected surfaces or items and respiratory droplets.
Transmission requires prolonged and often intimate contact with an infected individual.
While the current outbreak has largely impacted men who have sex with men, monkeypox can affect anyone who comes into prolonged contact with someone with monkeypox.
Monkeypox often starts with flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headaches and muscle aches and pains, can cause a distinctive blistering rash and swollen lymph nodes.
Victoria has recorded 22 cases of monkeypox, with seven active cases currently. While most of these cases have presented in returned international travellers, there have been two locally acquired cases in Australia, including one in Victoria.
The Department of Health is actively monitoring cases and contacts to prevent the further spread of monkeypox in the community.
Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said the vaccine was highly effective, however, initial eligibility for vaccination would be limited to priority at risk groups.
“Anyone who develops symptoms should immediately seek medical care, wear a mask and call ahead to make sure they can be isolated away from others,” she said.
Vaccines have also become available in metropolitan clinics including the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, Thorne Harbour Health, Northside Clinic, Collins Street Medical Centre or the Prahran Market Clinic.
