HILAC lifeguard training

RESIDENTS interested in learning a new skill this summer are invited to book their spot in upcoming lifeguard training at the Hamilton Indoor Leisure and Aquatic Centre (HILAC).

The course will offer budding lifeguards an opportunity to train locally, and build life-long skills including water rescues, resuscitation practises (CPR), pool surveillance and scanning techniques, leadership, communication and more.

Hosted by Life Saving Victoria, the nationally recognised two-day course will be held at HILAC on October 15-16, 2022, and November 12-13, 2022.

Last year, the Southern Grampians community experienced hardship servicing pools in the wider region due to shortages of available lifeguards.

Southern Grampians Shire Council mayor, Cr Bruach Colliton, has encouraged locals to enrol in the training course as an opportunity develop their skills and engage in the local community while earning an income.

“You might be someone who is after a refresher course or someone who is completely new to the field,” he said.

“Either way, the course offers our emerging lifeguards a chance to grow professionally and to develop some really important and tangible lifesaving skills.”

Lifeguards Quinlan Donehue and Rachel Page said the training paved the way for a rewarding career.

Ms Page praised the position for its capacity to provide an environment within which to develop confidence, problem-solving, and first aid skills. Mr Donehue echoed this sentiment,

“Lifeguarding is a rewarding career and is more than just keeping patrons safe around water. The hours are flexible, and it’s a great summer position - I love my job,” Mr Donehue said.

Bookings for lifeguard training can be made by going to Life Saving Victoria’s website at training.lsv.com.au/

Training runs between 9am-5pm. For more information, eligibility criteria, and to book a training session, contact HILAC or go to their website at hilac.com.au/
