REPORTS of the sudden resignation of The Hamilton and Alexandra College’s (THAAC) principal, Dr Andrew Hirst, have been confirmed, effective at the end of 2022.
A letter sent yesterday morning from THAAC school board chair, Rosie Merrin, to members of the THAAC community stated that Dr Hirst had expressed a desire to explore new opportunities in NSW after fulfilling seven years as THAAC principal.
Ms Merrin said the board was deeply appreciative of Dr Hirst’s dedication, particularly throughout the pandemic and for the successful sesquicentennial celebrations this year.
“We pay tribute to Andrew’s commitment to student wellbeing with his appointment of the College’s first school counsellor and the restructuring of the pastoral executive,” she said.
Dr Hirst will take a sabbatical in Term 4, so effectively September 16 will be his final day.
The recruitment process for Dr Hirst’s replacement is already underway, with deputy principal, Kristen Waldron, stepping in as acting principal until an appointment is made.
It is believed Dr Hirst’s resignation was “not unexpected” according to a local contact.
Recently there was also a change in chair of the school board after Warrnambool orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Alasdair Sutherland, resigned and was replaced by Ms Merrin of Penshurst.
