Wild, wet weather as winter departs

WINTER has gone out with a flash, a crash and a downpour foreshadowing what may be to come with spring just around the corner.

Storms swept through the district on Monday afternoon and evening and brought heavy rain which saw 24.8 millimetres recorded by 9am yesterday morning.

One Wando Vale property reported receiving 38 millimetres of rain in 24 hours.

The downpour made for the wettest day in a month which blitzed past its historical rainfall average of 81.9 millimetres.

Rainfall had already surpassed 100 millimetres last week, with a downpour the previous Monday bringing the monthly total past the mark.

The average maximum temperature was slightly cooler than usual at 14 degrees but the minimum nearly a full degree warmer at 6.1 degrees – the same as the average temperature recorded in September.

The last few days have warmed up considerably heading into spring, with Sunday seeing the warmest temperature of the month – 19.3 degrees – and Monday the warmest maximum – 10.7 degrees.

The lowest recorded temperature for Casterton in August was -0.7 on Monday 8 – the only day in which it hit negatives.

Spring is likely to continue the trend of higher than normal rainfall for Casterton with a strong possibility of being unusually hot throughout the district.

Casterton has a nearly 70 per cent chance of exceeding the historical median rainfall of 167.2 millimetres for the next three months, spread roughly evenly across September, October and November.

Rainfall could potentially even break the 200 millimetre mark with the latest Bureau of Meteorology outlook data listing a 32 per cent chance.

Temperatures look to be much higher than normal across the spring, with Casterton a 68 per cent of recording an average maximum temperature above the median of 19.1 degrees.

But minimum temperatures could rise much more significantly at a 52 per cent chance of being unusually warm – above 8.3 degrees.

In September alone, Casterton has been given a 56 per cent chance of reaching above the median 70.7 per cent rainfall and is expected to experience temperatures more consistent with historical averages.
