STAGE one of an almost half a million-dollar project to transform Macarthur’s Market Square will begin next week.
Civil works to revitalise the precinct, to add to the popular community space’s amenity and support future stages of works will commence next Monday, October 10.
Moyne Shire mayor, Cr Ian Smith, said it was an exciting project which is being made possible thanks to the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Fund.
“Over the next few weeks our contractors will be working on upgrading the footpaths inside the reserve and along Market Street, creating new parking bays in Eversley and High Streets, enhancing landscaping, kerb treatment and installing drainage and electrical infrastructure to accommodate future works,” he said.
“Contractors will also remove the existing playground and fencing due to its current condition and the risk to the community.
“That will get the area ready for installation of a new playground as part of the next stage of works, where a new barbeque facility will also be built.
“The current barbeque will remain in place until a new one is completed.
“The rotunda, well, and information boards will be retained and refreshed as part of future works, while the memorial rose garden will be untouched.”
Cr Smith said other future works also included a new multi-purpose court and would be dependent on future funding, with Council allocating $100,000 towards the projects, with several grant applications currently under consideration.
“This is a really exciting project which will enhance access to play and social recreation for all ages and all abilities and will enhance the space’s overall appearance,” he said.
“We are getting on and delivering this project for residents and visitors as part of our Great Moyne Build.
“Anyone wanting more information about the project can contact Council.”
It’s expected work will be completed before Christmas pending weather conditions and contractor availability.
