Pigeon poo problems fixed

AFTER receiving complaints from the community about the unkept state of the Commonwealth Bank forecourt, the Southern Grampians Shire Council organised for the area to be pressure washed earlier this week.

The brick features and benches, previously notorious for being covered in bird droppings and making the corner of Gray Street and Brown Street an eyesore, have now been restored to a clean and inviting area.

Southern Grampians Shire Council infrastructure and sustainability director, Marg Scanlon, said Council were implementing “a range of measures to deal with the pigeon poo issue”.

“Regular pressure washing, like that conducted by our team this week, will continue,” she said.

“Fine wire netting applied over the wall statue will restrict pigeons roosting within the sculpture frame.

“We are also awaiting delivery of a sonar device which deters birds, so we look forward to getting that in place in the coming weeks.

“This should have some positive effect we hope.”

While Council are doing what they can to reduce the likelihood of birds returning to the forecourt area, they are encouraging the community to do their part in helping to detract pigeons and other birds.

“This reactive work is reliant on the help of the community; we ask that community members cease feeding birds in this area,” Ms Scanlon said.
