They’re back… and enjoying the boardwalk

LAST week might not have been a good example, but the (hopefully) warmer weather coming our way has also seen the return of a favourite to our streets and roads.

Cycling Without Age riders took to the new boardwalk and pathways on the Portland foreshore on Tuesday last week, with their passengers hailing from the Archie Graham Community Centre in Warrnambool.

The visitors got a close up look around the foreshore on a less-than-ideal day, but for Cycling Without Age it was an important step to get going again after winter.

“We’re just happy to get the bikes back out,” said Cycling Without Age’s Michelle Thow.

“The idea is to get people out with the wind in their hair, and we’re so excited with the all-abilities (pathways).”

Cycling Without Age had a busy program coming up, with the Dartmoor Primary School 150th anniversary celebrations and the Upwelling Festival in Portland both later this month.

“We’re happy to have any volunteers that would like to come on board,” Ms Thow said.

“The more volunteers we have the more riding we can do.”

But not just riders – anyone wanting a ride as well with Cycling Without Age, an initiative of the Rotary Club of Portland which aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness by providing older members of the community a trishaw ride around the community and which was named the community enterprise of the year at this year’s Glenelg Shire Business Awards.

“We’re happy to ride for community groups as well,” she said.

Anyone interested in volunteering or getting a ride organised can contact Cycling Without Age Portland on its Facebook page.
