A REMEMBRANCE Day service will be hosted by the Hamilton RSL at 10.30am for a 10.45am start on November 11, with a minute’s silence at 11am at the Melville Oval Cenotaph, corner Glenelg Highway and Lonsdale Street, Hamilton.
Hamilton RSL president, Danny Bland reiterated the importance of commemorating that integral moment in world history, of great significance to Australia, when at the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month in 1918, the guns fell silent on the Western Front, ending the Great War.
In 1919, King George V requested the Empire to cease work at 11am and hold a two-minute vigil in silence on Armistice Day, to remember the fallen of the Great War.
Over time, this evolved into a minute’s silence on Remembrance Day, a day to honour all those who have fallen and served in wars.
Every year, as a nation, we pause in silence to remember the great sacrifice and honour of our servicemen and women, those Australians who died or suffered in wars, conflicts and peace operations.
A light lunch, tea, coffee and bar will be available at the Hamilton RSL Hall, 81 Kennedy St, following the service.
