Egg-ceptional Artwork at Heywood Hotel

THE Heywood Hotel was egged last Friday by a group of local and not so local artists part of Brave New Skills (BNS) Art Collective.

BNS Art Collective decorated the facade of Heywood Hotel with a larger than life, temporary, Indigenous Bird Egg Installation on Friday, as locals dining inside watched and others passing by observed.

Artists involved in creating the first collaborative artwork for their art portfolio were a mix of locals and people from Geelong, Hobart and Port Fairy.

The artists were Anitha S Smith, Tracy O'Connor, Danielle Blain, Amy Pyers, Michelle Breen and Cat Bailey.

The BNS Art Collective was formed by the first participants in the 0 2 Portfolio Art Classes created by artist Cat Bailey as part of her online business Brave New Skills.

Port Fairy Artist Tracy O'Connor said it was her fist time collaborating on a public artwork.

“You don't know how the public will take it, but they've all been really positive and it's not permanent,” she said.

“Cat has been doing an art course, and this was one of our end goals for the first term to have an installation, and we thought we might as well do it to show some sort of recognition of the vulnerability of the climate to do with the birds around here.

“It’s sort of an experiment really, to see what our artistic skills are like, but also it's good to show what the environments about and also to show that we're all a bit fragile, like eggs.”

Ms Bailey said she was very grateful that Alana from the Heywood Hotel had supported their request to use the Hotel as a huge canvas, which dark colour made a great background for the lighter eggs.

“Lucky for us the two artists involved in the installation of the eggs had a brilliant ability for spatial placement,” she said.

“A lot of joy was derived from experimenting and playing with watercolour and acrylic paints to create the eggs based on local birds such as emu, wedgetail, and seagull to name a few.

“I really enjoyed the lovely connection to the people and Heywood community involved in this project and as I really value nature and art the theme of the beauty and fragility of the local environment really resonated with me.

“I have lived in countries where the only bird sound you can hear is the sound of caged birds.

“In this region we wake every morning to the sound of a cacophony of amazing birds and because I value this and how it gives life a richer texture - it is a satisfying to celebrate it through art.”
