THE Country Women’s Association (CWA) Burswood Branch turned 70 last Tuesday, and there was plenty of tea, cakes and memories to be shared.
A high tea was in order for the celebrations at the Uniting Church Hall.
Present and past members of the Burswood Branch CWA, and friends, were invited to reflect on memorabilia and share their own home-made baked goods to celebrate this 70th birthday, acknowledging the day of the first ever CWA meeting in Portland on November 8, 1952.
Being initially known as the Younger Set Branch, in 1966 they then legally became the Burswood Branch after being granted permission from William and Zenda Lewis, then owners of Burswood.
President of the branch Debbie Hawk said the celebrations women with much talent in attendance.
“There's so many creative minds and we thought we'd get everybody together and reminisce,” she said.
“We have decided that it would be great to get past and present members together, as many as we could to celebrate the fact that we've had 70 years of existence.
“As part of our collect, let us not forget to be kind, let us be large in thought, in word and deed.
“I'm very proud to be associated with CWA Victoria.”
The association meets every month on a Tuesday and make it their purpose to support various causes in the community, such as Food4Thought – a service of providing breakfast foods to local schools.
Next, they are looking towards how they can support others practically, regarding the recent flood crisis, as they are consistently discussing how they could do better and ways to do their part in helping.
Besides planning their next move however, the group social outings.
By coincidence, sharing a birthday with the branch was their secretary Carol Darby, who’s husband also decorated the events green and yellow cake.
