Local students top the state

THREE Grade 5 students at George Street Primary School achieved quite a feat recently when they scored within the top two per cent across the state for academics.

Students at the school completed the State Government assessment undertaken by the Department of Education and Training (DET) last term, which saw their skills in mathematics and English put to the test.

Once the results were in, George Street Primary School principal, Tina Walkeden, said she was ecstatic to receive a call from the DET revealing the excellent news.

“I was quite excited to receive a phone call notifying us that three of our students had made it into the program for excellence in mathematics and English,” she said.

“This is a DET initiative allowing students from Grades 3 – 8 the chance to participate in a higher achievers extension program.”

Ms Walkeden said the three Grade 5 students now participate in the weekly online higher achievers extension program, with Fatiha Nuha and Kora Murray learning English, while Meihana Marsh learns mathematics.

Ms Walkeden said the entire school community was proud of the students for their outstanding academic achievements and dedication to learning.

“Our three students have excelled in a variety of assessments throughout the year to be placed in the top two per cent of the state, which shows the quality of teaching and learning happening here at George Street,” she said.
