Primary school joins centenary and remembrance gathering
Jill Robertson - Casterton Primary School
ON REMEMBRANCE Day we were very privileged to have been invited to join with the RSL and the Bahgallah community to commemorate both the Centenary of the Bahgallah Hall and take part in the Remembrance Day Service.
We were lucky to be able to take students from Grades 4 to 6 to the Bahgallah Hall for this important event.
We joined our community and the world, in honouring those who’ve served and sacrificed.
We remember all those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
Thank you to our school leaders, Chloe Kurzman and Jett Lykke, who were invited to lay a wreath on behalf of our school.
There was a large crowd at the Bahgallah Hall for the service and I am very proud of our students who looked very smart in full school uniform, as they stood with respect for the occasion to represent our school.
In the second half of the service, the Bahgallah Hall Committee unveiled a new Honour Board and descendants of the soldiers named on the board, were invited to lay a wreath at the flagpole.
Henry Wombwell and Brody Davis both stood up for their families.
5-cent challenge
OUR 5-cent challenge is now complete – Congratulations Grade Prep/1 for the largest tally of $150.10 with an admirable second place going to Grade 4/5 with $121.40.
Thank you to Julie Robins and Cassie Bailey for counting all the coins, organising a fun event for the students.
Colouring competition
OUR Grade 5/6 students have organised a Christmas colouring-in competition for children from our three local primary schools and the kinder, to be displayed in the Co-op on Shopping Frenzy Night – Friday, 18 November.
The 5/6 Grade will be judging the art and creating the display next Friday with the help of the Hands on Learning crew.
Prizes will be returned via the school/kinder for the winners in the three age groups - Under 5, 6 to 9 years and 10 to 13.
Good luck everyone!
Olympiad success
Suzie McManus - Sacred Heart School
CONGRATULATIONS to our Grade 4 to 6 students who have competed in five Olympiads over the school year.
We combined with Grade 5/6 students from St Joseph's Coleraine to make one team; these clever Sacred Heart students placed in the top five for the competition.
We have worked hard on improving our problem-solving skills throughout the year and it looks like it has paid off!
Water sports
SLIPPERY dips replaced cricket this week when we couldn't resist the chance of getting wet on Wednesday.
For our PE lesson, we had a water-based version of the old Under Over game using a wet sponge instead of a ball and a completely mad water pistol fight.
Mardi Kurzman definitely had the advantage as she had control of the fire hose!
Mini Vinnies Report
OUR next project is the Christmas Appeal and this year, the St Vincent de Paul Society has asked us to work on collecting cash donations instead of items for a hamper this year, so we have come up with a few ideas for raising money for those who are less fortunate and find Christmas a difficult time of year.
Our ideas include:
Poems of commemoration for Remembrance Day
Stephanie and Rylan - Newspaper Club - Merino Consolidated School
WE HAVE been practising our poems to read for Remembrance Day.
We started practicing them a few weeks ago.
I went to Digby in the morning and read my poem with Rylan and we also read it at the Merino Cenotaph.
Our poem is called ‘Poppy, Poppy’.
I really liked reading my poem and I learnt it off by heart.
Lanterns
EACH week we have our Artist in Residence come to our school and we make different lanterns.
We make a different lantern that fits in with our topic that we are learning about.
Last week the festival that we were studying was a Vietnamese lantern festival.
We used tissue paper and made frames out of balsa wood.
Digby Ladies
EACH week we have the Digby ladies over to our school and they help us knit.
I love it when the Digby ladies come to visit us because they are very nice.
They help us with other types of craft too.
We are making ‘Community sheep’ called Mia and Matao.
They are going to look like English Leicester sheep.
Garden
AT MERINO we have been doing lots of gardening to get our gardens ready for the summer.
We have been doing lots and lots of weeding in the garden and I have been watering the garden too.
My job is to water the big plants like the lavender and daisy plants.
I like to water the lettuce plants and the tomato plants. I really can’t wait to eat the plants that we have grown!
Cooking
LAST week in Kitchen we made sushi.
I had never eaten sushi before and I really liked it.
It was green sushi and it had broccoli that we had grown in the garden.
It also had bean sprouts and avocado and cucumber and sushi rice.
Ms Hulin also gave us all some wasabi paste to try.
It was very spicy.
I am going to make sushi at home.
Dual winners in show design competition
Ann Hirst - Casterton Secondary College
THE Casterton P&A Society ran a competition at the Secondary College for students to design the cover for this year’s Casterton Show program booklet.
After long scrutiny, the P&A committee decided on joint winners in Feba Thankam-Shiju and Mylie Ireland.
Committee member Linda Bunnik delivered the competition prizes to the students, which included the original artwork framed and entry into the show for each of the winners.
