THERE was a homegrown spread of food at Heywood District and Secondary College last Tuesday, with the aim to capture locals’ attention with a green idea.
The event ran from 2pm to 6pm for the whole Heywood community to attend and try some woodfire pizza, along with an invitation to discuss plans for the towns very own community garden, which teacher and coordinator of the schools Kitchen Garden Elly Colley believes she knows the best location for.
Year nine to ten students had prepared a variety of seedlings for the day, ranging from rainbow chard and chocolate mint to oregano and genovese tomatoes.
Students had even put together and cooked pizza in the schools very own woodfire oven, built by VCAL students a few years ago.
The students prepared mostly vegetarian pizzas, including sweet potato and feta pizza, free for anyone in attendance to enjoy.
Ms Colley said the school put this event together with the hopes to get in some good discussion about a building a community garden where the untouched tennis court is behind the school.
“The idea of the day is to finally get the community in, just to have a look to see what's here and get some ideas about what they want and start to get the ball rolling to set up a committee to run a community garden,” she said.
“We're lucky we've already got the land.
“A lot of community gardens have to work with the Shire to try and find land and we've already got that, the old tennis courts.
“Hopefully it will be all access, so we'll have beds that are open for everybody to access, if you’re in a wheelchair or walker.
“It’s to get people together, but also to start cooking and eating a bit healthier. Growing fresh food is really what it's all about.”
Anyone willing to get involved or has an idea to share are invited to call the secondary school and get in contact Ms Colley.
