Heywood RSL keen to welcome new members

THE Heywood Sub-branch of the Returned and Services League (RSL) is welcoming locals interested in joining and helping the group thrive.

In the past there have been a few worrying moments where it looked like the branch might’ve had to fold, but each time some extra members have joined.

Currently the group is healthy with a two dozen members, but feel ready to bolster the membership ranks.

To join you don’t have to be an ex-serving member of the defence force, as there are a variety of categories to fit into, such as being related to an ex-serving member.

Heywood Sub-branch RSL acting president and Squadron Leader Barry Bardoe said there were a lot of opportunities for people to join.

“Well, I'm a currently serving member, I'm a Squadron Leader, but I do only part time and remotely now,” he said.

“We have people who have served at various lengths of time and in different services and we've also got affiliate members, people whose family members have served.

“It's a very big range.

“It is time to start recruiting new people and make the community aware of the different categories they can join.”

The RSL is a chance for members to connect with the wider veteran community, whether they have an ex-serving family member or not.

Its social get togethers includes members meeting and chatting.

Branch meetings are held regularly every month, with the chance to socialise at the end.

Mr Bardoe said the sub-branch planned to put on more regular social events where people can connect and gain a bit of support.

There is no typical age preference required of those wanting to join, he said.

“I don't think there's a typical age because any adult can join and what a lot of people overlook is that we've got a much younger demographic of serving people and family members.

“We were in Afghanistan for almost 20 years, a lot of much younger people went through that.

“So, there's the perception that the RSL is for older people and that's not the case, there are younger veterans in our community that we want to reach out to as well.”

Mr Bardoe said there were plenty of people out there who potentially might want to join and will enjoy the support and friendship.

“We have a committee that has all the usual roles in it, which we always need help with.

“Of course, there's major events like Anzac Day that require a lot of effort and our Anzac Day here, they're amazing.

“I am a recent member, but the people I've met so far are just outstanding. They're good people.”
