HOT on the tail of the State Government’s new council rate cap of 3.5 per cent for the 2023/24 financial year, under the Fair Go Rates system designed to protect Victorians from uncontrolled rate hikes, came a survey result, revealing most Victorians want local councils abolished.
Notwithstanding the rate capping, polling company RedBridge found that Victorians remain dissatisfied with the burden of paying rates, with nearly 60 per cent of those surveyed wanting mergers and larger councils to end the duplication of resources and jobs to save money.
