OUR generous community has rallied again for a little boy, four-year-old Tex, following an accident in recent weeks that left him badly burnt.
After initial treatment at the Hamilton Base Hospital, Tex was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) where he has undergone surgery and skin grafts.
A family friend, Jessica Martin immediately set about raising funds to help Tex and his parents, Ebony and Luke Brown, with medical bills, and created a GoFundMe page that quickly raised over $4400. So far Tex has needed two lots of surgeries including skin grafts but will need ongoing treatment.
Tex was burnt when he accidentally tripped and fell into a fire his family had been sitting around on December 29 last year. He suffered significant burns to his hands, right hip and ankles, as well as minor burns to the majority of his body.
Laura Reid, the owner of a children’s indoor playground in Hamilton - PJ’s Playhouse - also jumped at the chance to help the family out and held a ‘Dance for Tex’ disco on Thursday night.
All funds raised will go directly to Tex and his family to help with ongoing medical expenses and travel to and from the RCH.
PJ’s was transformed with colourful lights and fitted with a dance floor allowing children to dance or play away on the night.
“It was a really great night,” Ms Reid said.
“We had a lot of people show up - a lot of people also couldn’t come because of being away on holidays or whatever, but a lot of them still wanted to donate by buying tickets - that was really sweet.
“We also had the equipment we needed to run the event donated so that we were able to give more of the funds to the Browns.
“We raised over $400 - we’re still counting that this morning (Friday) and will give them that today - that will go towards his treatment.”
Ms Reid said it was fantastic that Tex was able to attend the event and he was very clearly enjoying himself.
“He showed up and he was bossing me around telling me which songs to put on,” she said.
“Obviously we wanted everyone to have a good time so the fact that Tex was enjoying the night was really great.
“And it was really great that the Salvos donated a heap of unicorn head bands and glow sticks, so we were able to hand them out to the kids that were there.
“All the girls were having a great time showing everyone how they could do cartwheels and the splits.
“Tex was having a good giggle.”
