Free string quartet performance

A FREE community concert by the Australian String Quartet (ASQ) will be held at The Hamilton and Alexandra College in the Kantor Family Music & Performing Arts Centre tomorrow at 7pm.

The free performance will include a selection of movements by Beethoven, Westlake (Australian composer) and Caroline Shaw (American composer).

The ASQ will travel to the region from their home base of Adelaide University ahead of a series of performances in the region, including the free community event.

ASQ artists include violinists, Dale Barltrop and Francesca Hiew, Chris Cartlidge on viola, and Michael Dahlenburg on cello.

However, exclusive to the Hamilton String Ensemble only, will be a short workshop preceding the concert giving them the privilege of collaborating musically with four of Australia’s best chamber musicians.

Hamilton String Ensemble’s first violinist and spokesperson, Tim Hallam, said he and his musical colleagues were looking forward to gaining insights from some of Australia’s best chamber musicians.

“It will be a wonderful experience to be able to play in front of such accomplished chamber musicians,” he said.

“Chamber music is an intimate musical experience for the performer and the audience - one that you don’t get with a full orchestra.

“We will be going over the second movement of Bach’s double violin concerto in D minor,” he said.

Written by Johan Sebastian Bach circa 1750, the concerto is considered one of Bach’s most famous works.

Featuring two violin solos, it is a sequential melodic fugue; separate contrapuntal violin parts, one repeating the other.

“Every utterance of this piece of Bach’s is just beautiful,” Mr Hallam said.

“There’s a very good reason Bach is considered one of the most famous composers of all time - he’s certainly in the top three.

“And the Kantor PAC sounds so good - it is wonderful to play there.”

“The workshop will be awesome - but also you wouldn’t want to miss the free performance.”

The ASQ will take a break after the workshop before commencing with the free community concert which was made possible due to the generous support of Allan Myers AC, Maria Myers AC, and the Robert Salzer Foundation.
