Rams in the middle of toughest test

There is an iconic stretch of three holes at Augusta National Golf Course in the US that are referred to as ‘Amen Corner’, where many a round has been shattered, as players strive to claim the fabled Green Jacket, and Glenthompson-Dunkeld are right in the middle of its own pivotal stretch during the Mininera and District Football League season.

The Rams play the Ararat Eagles at Dunkeld Recreation Reserve today, knowing they can ill afford to lose a second game in succession after going down to Woorndoo-Mortlake by 79 points last round.

With a game away from home against the ladder-leading Tatyoon to follow next round, the Rams must win at least one these games to remain in finals contention.

Glenthompson-Dunkeld started the season with four undefeated results, but badly stumbled last round against the Tigers, as injuries in the game hit hard into the depth of the squad.

Some of those players have recovered and will take their place on field, but there is doubt over others.

Ararat regained its winning form against Lismore-Derrinallum last week after being thoroughly outplayed by Penshurst in round four.

As reigning premiers, the Eagles are the hunted team that all others want to defeat, and they start as favourites in the game, hoping to leapfrog the Rams on the ladder.

Other games

PENSHURST is riding a strong wave of form, winning its last three games after two losses to start the season, and will host Wickliffe-Lake Bolac, which is sitting on the second rung of the ladder.

The Baby Bombers are being mentored by veterans such as Tim McGregor (who played game number 300 last Saturday) and captain, Kieran Neeson, who are leading from the front as they guide their young teammates forward.

McGregor kicked a bag of six goals last week and is providing a tall option up front for the midfield, while Aaron Glare, Henry Bensch and Jacob Mibus are getting plenty of the ball also.

The Magpies could well have been atop the ladder except for a three-point loss to Tatyoon in the game of the season to date, and they will go into the game as firm favourites.

The visitors will have to be at the top of their game to defeat their hosts, as the Bombers are primed to cause an upset.

HAWKESDALE-MACARTHUR must win against Moyston-Willaura today at Willaura Recreation Reserve today if it wants to have any chance of playing finals this season.

The Eagles displayed good form to start the season, but a tough draw has seen the side fall away from that form, but the Pumas are at four-figure odds against to win this game such is their form this season, despite the one-off inclusion of AFL premiership player and 300-gamer, Kane Cornes.

The home side did record a morale-boosting win against Caramut last week to surely assign the wooden spoon to the Swans, but they are still at the wrong end of the ladder and should be no match for their visitors.

TATYOON hosts Woorndoo-Mortlake at Tatyoon Recreation Reserve knowing its place atop the premiership ladder is at stake should it lose.

The Hawks are yet to lose and this game against the third-placed Tigers (who have lost only once) is a toss-of-the-coin match that could be won by either team.

The home side should take care of business, but should they not be at the top of their game, then the Tigers are primed to pounce with the form they have shown recently.

THE winner of the Lismore-Derrinallum versus SMW Rovers game at Derrinallum Recreation Reserve will open a gap on the ladder from the loser, as both teams are locked together.

Both teams enter the game without winning form, as both are struggling to perform on field, but based on home ground advantage, the Demons start favourites.

GREAT Western should find itself in the top five after hosting cellar dwellers Caramut at Great Western Recreation Reserve today where the Lions are expected to get the points against the Swans.
