Party with the Ponies at Apsley this long weekend

APSLEY’S big one-day event of the year will be a weekend of celebrations this June long weekend, with the Tour De Frances and Apsley Cup Eve Cabaret to start the party for the Apsley Cup.

A great way to get the blood pumping and work up a sweat, in anticipation of a few bevvies and plenty of amazing food at the races, the Tour de Frances bike ride kicks off with registrations and brekkie at the Corner Shop Apsley at 8am, Victorian time on Saturday, 10 June, with the ride heading off at 9.30am.

The trip takes riders on a choice of 40 or 60-kilometre treks to Frances and if a major haul is not your thing, a family bike ride of just six kilometres from the Llanthro gate to Apsley, might be just the ticket.

Registration for the Tour De Frances is $50 and includes entry to the Apsley Cup.

To really get the party started, the Apsley Hall will rock to the sounds of Banjo Jackson and The Stooges at the Apsley Cup Eve Cabaret.

You can BYO drinks and nibbles, to ensure the bar is stocked with everything to your taste, but make sure you take up the offer of a complementary mulled wine – just the thing to stave-off winter chills – upon arrival.

Doors open at 7.30pm and with ‘Winter Cocktail Attire’ the dress code, it may be the perfect opportunity to test out a cup-day fashions option.

The feature of this year’s Apsley Cup Day, held at the Edenhope Racecourse, will be the Winter Woolies Marquees, brought to you by Swish Events.

With cocktail food, bar, band until 7pm, bookie – and warmth! – it’s the perfect place to kick back and watch enjoy country racing at its best.

Racing club manager, Tammy Pretlove said the committee had been working hard to ensure the grounds and track were up to scratch and excited with their plans for this Apsley Cup Day.

“We’ve got free kids activities all day – Jamie Lind and his famous Bucking Bull and Jumping Castle and a wonderful new addition is the Glitterbug Face and Body Art, who will join us to help keep kids entertained,” Ms Pretlove said.

“And the kids are welcome to join you in the Winter Woollies Marquee.”

The event is fully-catered with a range of food stalls and the bar for all tastes and budgets, with plenty of places to park on the lawns, under the iconic trees.

For those who fancy a ‘fancy picnic-style’ lunch, a number of catering packages are available, which can be enjoyed around the grounds, at your leisure and marquee packages are available, with a ‘build your own’ option, to tailor your race day experience, to your exact liking.

Ms Pretlove said the club was looking forward to seeing a sea of country racing-inspired fashions trackside this year

“While we enjoy the flair of beautiful ensembles, high-end fashion creations and smart suits of metro race meetings for Spring Carnival, we love seeing fashions that match our country racing venue – a more relaxed dress code where sundresses and fun shirts with cleverly-matched (or contrasted) accessories are a must,” Ms Pretlove said.

“We want people to dress for a fun relaxed day at the country races.”

Fashions on the Field will be held in both adults and children’s sections and entries will be taken on-course, on the day.

For those attending for the ‘serious’ business of the day, an eight-event card is scheduled, culminating in the $50,000 bet365 Apsley Cup.

Ms Pretlove said the club’s sponsors had once again put their hands up to ensure a great day of country racing for all visitors.

“Once again, the club has received fantastic support from all of our sponsors, both for the racing events and the trackside entertainment and facilities and while I don’t want to try and name them all and risk missing someone, we thank them for their ongoing support – we could not do this without them!” she said.

“The track is looking fantastic and we’re looking forward to a great day of racing.”

Full, on-course betting facilities will be available for those looking to test out their knowledge (or luck!) on the ponies, including a bookies’ ring and TAB office.

Gates open at 11am on Sunday, 11 June and all of your ticket, catering and free bus booking information can be found online at www.countryracing.com.au/clubs/apsley.
