ART can bring out different things in different people, but for Sandra Komes enjoyment would be top of the list.
The Portlander only took up painting a couple of years ago and has been making every post a winner since.
Ms Komes, who has a disability, had never really delved into the art world before, but a conversation changed things, as did a meeting with artist and Portland Artists’ Society member Anna Linden.
“One of the ladies at the house (she lives in) suggested it,” said support worker Kathy Patterson.
“We met Anna and Anna and Sandra got on really well, and we’ve been coming here every Friday since.
“I think the rapport between these two is lovely, it’s a lovely friendship.”
Ms Komes enjoys painting most things, particularly things from photographs, such as portraits, and objects, although she has done some abstract painting as well.
“She’s always concentrating and focusing on what she’s doing with a smile on her face,” Ms Linden said.
“She loves the recognition and putting what she sees on to canvas.
“She does her own thing and follows instruction – my job is just to guide her and help her with colour mixing.
“She’s learned all about colour and perspective and shading and all those things.”
Ms Komes is also a member of the Artists’ Society and has had four of her works exhibited in the Argyle Gallery at the Julia Street Creative Space, downstairs from where she has her weekly sessions with Ms Linden.
Aside from Ms Linden, a trained diversional therapist, she has also done painting with another local artist in Rory Carter.
“We’re teaching her lots of different styles,” Ms Linden said.
“She seems to be best with the traditional style.
“She’s always saying ‘look what I’ve done’, her recognition’s amazing.
“She’s so overwhelmed and happy she’s achieved things, it makes her feel valued, worthwhile and included.
“I always enjoy trying to bring out the best in people – it’s important people don’t sit still and do things that make them feel good about themselves.”
