Crash questions remain

INVESTIGATIONS into the circumstances regarding the fatal car accident at Bochara on the weekend that claimed the lives of four Hamilton people are ongoing and the subject of the Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU).

Those who died included three young teenagers, 14-year-olds Meghan Fox and Lucus Garzoli, Joshua Elmes, 15, and an adult woman, Alicia Montebello, 31.

As of Friday morning, Victoria Police had formally identified three of the victims who died in the early hours of Saturday, May 27.

“The fourth deceased has not been formally identified at this stage,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

A chilling Snapchat video that was recorded late on Friday night or early Saturday morning by one of the deceased allegedly moments prior to the crash, was uploaded before the accident had occurred, with audio revealing the red Toyota Corolla was travelling at 130km/h.

Further compounding speculative commentary swirling within the Hamilton community around the circumstances preceding the crash, is the song that can be heard in the background of the video which was “For the last time” by $uicideboy$.

It is believed that moments later, Ms Montebello’s car left the road and hit a tree on the Wannon-Nigretta Falls Road.

Several media outlets have reported that Ms Montebello had an extensive history with police, including in Hamilton.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police, from the Reactive Media Unit, said information relating to the individuals involved in the accident would form part of a coronial investigation.

“As the subject of this enquiry has passed away and the investigation into the circumstances of the collision is currently subject to an ongoing MCIU investigation … it would be inappropriate to comment further,” they said.

Ms Montebello’s alleged offences included grooming, stalking, breaching intervention orders, breaching bail conditions, willful damage, plus extensive driving offences including driving an unregistered vehicle, driving whilst exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit and driving whilst disqualified.

She was also originally claimed by police to have been responsible for doing burnouts and tearing up turf at the Branxholme Recreation Reserve on February 18 and driving through the netting behind the goal posts which caused significant financial damage.

Ms Montebello’s mother, Debbie Montebello, responded in a district newspaper to the negative media coverage her deceased daughter received after the crash.

“You don’t know the facts,” she said.

“There’s stuff that’s been written that’s not true.

“Alicia was the most beautiful girl in the world.

“I hope you never have to go through the pain we are going through losing a child and that your child’s name doesn’t get (splashed) all over the paper.

“We are hurting so much and it hurts even more to read this.

“She loved her family and friends.”

Victoria Police would not be drawn into commentary around whether any of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seatbelts and who was driving at the time the vehicle crashed.

“We are still piecing that information together,” the Victoria Police spokesperson said.

A fifth occupant of the car was seriously injured in the accident and was airlifted from the scene to the Alfred Hospital with life threatening injuries at the time.

A spokesperson for the Alfred Hospital has provided regular updates on the condition of Jorja Fox, 17, sister of one of the deceased, Meghan Fox, and said her condition was serious but stable on Wednesday afternoon.

An update was provided on the condition of the patient on Friday morning.

“This patient is in a stable condition,” they said.
