A bagpipe major and train driver

BAGPIPE legend and retired train driver Arthur Neve celebrated his 100th birthday on Wednesday, joined by his close family.

Mr Neve was joined by his two sons, some of his grandchildren and one of his great grandchildren to celebrate his life, eat cake and ponder over the many birthday cards he received, including one from King Charles III.

Other cards received were from Governor-General of Australia David Hurley, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, local politician Gayle Tierney and others.

It was only 10 years ago when Mr Neve had to retire from playing the bagpipes when he lost feeling in his fingers, but the music he played in the past is still talked about by his family.

His son Colin Neve said his father taught him how to play the instrument, as well as many other young ones in town.

Colin now keeps his father’s bagpipes at home.

“Those pipes were given to dad when he was 12 from his great-great grandfather, so they must be nearly 200 years old,” he said.

“When he moved to Portland, he joined the band just as a player and then he took over as pipe major for it must have been 30 years.”

Not all his grandchildren to great-great grandchildren could attend his birthday celebration, held at Portland Bupa where he is a resident, but his family there expressed how proud they were of him.
